2011 NETWO Short Story Contest Winners Announced
One of the highlights of the Awards Banquet at the end of the 25th annual NETWO writers' conference was the
announcement of the winners of the short story contest.
This year, we had three (3) separate judges reviewing the stories and
making the final decisions. And judging from the comments and results, it was a difficult job, with
many good stories to choose from. After the dust settled and the results were combined, here are the winners for the 2011
NETWO Short Story Contest.
First Place - $150 award and an offer of publication in The Storyteller . . . Iwo by Frank Carden, Las Cruces, NM
Second Place - $100 award . . . A Frontier's Passing by Heath Dollar, Haslet, TX
Third Place - $50 award . . . It's Time to Open the Gate by Elaine Piestch, Ringgold, LA
Fourth Place - $25 award . . . The Franklin County Strawberry Festival by Gail Reed, Mt. Vernon, TX
Because of the excellent stories, the judges awarded nine Honorable Mentions. We've never had that many Honorable Mentions before.
They did not rank these. So, the Honorable Mentions are given in alphabetic order by story title. They are:
(Almost) Silent Partner by Christine Wilson, Houston, TX
Dark Crow by Steve Reese, Paris, TX
Four Feet to the Yard by Wayland Stallard, Roanoke, VA
Growing Pains by Donna Paul, Avinger, TX
Hindsight by Christine Wilson, Houston, TX
Howl at the Moon by Ann Everett, Mt. Pleasant, TX
Peter's Test by Bettye Gilbert, Winnsboro, TX
Tea with Miss Maggie by Mike Clifton, Mt. Pleasant, TX
The Day Before Yesterday by Leonard D. Reese, III, Tatum, TX.
Congratulations to all. And to all who entered, congratulations. You are writing. You are putting your work up for judging.
You are willing to have your work compared with that of other writers. You are a winner for entering. How many other writers
are not willing for their stories to see the light of day. Please enter again this year. You're a winner if you enter.
